Thank you…

Our huge thanks to the marvellous charity Bridge2Aid for supporting the 543 Junior website.

The international dental charity has placed a link on their site www.bridge2aid.org to www.543junior.co.uk – to help users of their website in the fight against dental problems.

Bridge2Aid was set up in Tanzania to help in the fight to provide access to dental pain relief. As they state on their website almost three quarters of the world’s population have no access to the most simple dental pain relief, leaving billions to face a daily battle with pain in the toughest of life circumstances.

Bridge2Aid is working tirelessly to provide access to dental pain relief for the millions of people suffering in the developing world. Bridge2Aid is the UK’s fastest growing UK dental charity working in developing nations.

The charity focusses on sustainability and empowering people to improve their own lives over the long term. To date Bridge2Aid has trained over 160 local health workers in emergency dentistry, and now train more than 50 health workers each year. This training has not only directly treated tens of thousands of people but has also extended access to emergency dentistry services to people living in the rural areas. An estimated 1.6 million people now live within reach of someone who can help them when they have dental pain.

Bridge2Aid has also established a long term development programme with the disabled and people affected by Leprosy at Bukumbi Care Centre.

We are thrilled to received Bridge2Aid’s endorsement of our website for children and young people.

Oral health … alcohol and smoking…

Big Bad Wolf

Spring is now with us and hopefully some better weather! Beer gardens and BBQ’s are on the horizon – but we are 543 still want everyone to make sure they take extra care of their teeth and oral hygiene.

Alcohol increases the risk of tooth decay and erosion. Some alcoholic drinks have high sugar content, and some mixed drinks contain acids. If consumed often and in large amounts alcoholic drinks can cause dental erosion and decay.

Alcoholic drinks can also cause mouth cancer – and smoking and drinking together further increases the risk of developing mouth cancer.

Smoking causes gum disease, tooth loss and tooth staining…and in the worst cases mouth cancer. It is one of the main causes of bad breath and should be avoided at all costs in order to maintain good oral hygiene.

We all want you to enjoy the spring and summer – but also remember to take care of your teeth to keep a gleaming smile. Ask your dentist for advice and ask him or her to show you the damage you are doing to your teeth.

BBW heads to the farm…

Big Bad Wolf

The Big Bad Wolf (nicknamed BBW) is shortly going out on his next adventure – this time to visit children having half term fun at Honeysuckle Farm in Hornsea.

On Friday 1st June BBW will be hot footing it across to Hornsea’s popular farm for a visit to the children and the vast array of animals (he’s kind of hoping he’ll fit in!).

BBW is keen to promote his message of looking after your teeth – and what better way to spread his messages than when Honeysuckle Farm will be packed with children enjoying the start of the half term holidays!

His last public trip out was to The Deep at the end of last year – so he’s keen to get out and about and spreading his message of keeping healthy teeth.

So if you want to see BBW on his latest adventure go down to Honeysuckle Farm between 11am and 1pm… BBW hopes to see you there!

We go live with a Pioneering New Website for Children

Hull has one of the highest rates of tooth decay in children and young people – with that in mind we have now launched www.543junior.co.uk –  a new free for everyone website with one simple aim – to encourage children and young people to look after their teeth.

We are very excited to launch this new site and already scores of schools across the region are accessing and taking advantage of it in the classroom.

The website was driven by 543’s involvement with Henry Schein in Brush Bus, a public/private partnership with the City Health Care Partnership (CHCP). 543 and Henry Schein are currently supporting 12 schools – with 3,800 of the 9,500 children involved in the Brush Bus programme in Hull.

At these schools the children are being examined over a two-year period

Chris Groombridge, Managing Director of 543 Dental Centre, said 543’s work with the schools over recent years has been eye-opening in terms of many school children simply not knowing how to care for their teeth correctly. He said: “As health professionals, we believe that prevention is better than cure and we also know that Hull, in particular has a real problem with unacceptably high levels of tooth decay in its young people.

“Our junior website is an initiative that no other dental practice that we are aware of in Hull and East Yorkshire has undertaken to this level and we are very proud it. We know that it can continue to back up the Brush Bus programme and really improve children’s dental health in this city.”

The website is laid out in a very child-friendly manner and provides relevant and interesting information aimed at four different age categories: 5-7, 7-11, 11-14 and 14-16 year olds. There are also sections for parents and teachers – with lots of helpful print out materials and resources to be used in the classroom.

The new site has the backing of Hull Children’s University and 543 want every school, primary and secondary, to take advantage of this free tool…do log on and get involved!
